A massive volcanic eruption near Naples could have been the cause of the extinction of our Neanderthal ancestors.

The hypothesis has been one of the protagonists this week during a conference held at the British Museum in London, entitled "When Europe was covered in ice and ash”, In which one of the conclusions has been that due to this event Neanderthals could have given way to homo sapiens.

The theory holds that in the Campi Flegrei area 39,000 years ago there was a gigantic eruption of the volcano with a catastrophic outcome for Neanderthals. Being the largest volcanic eruption that has occurred in Europe during the last 200,000 years, its effects included the formation of huge columns of ash that caused the sun to be hidden for years, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures and pollution of the air with toxic substances.

Despite the fact that this hypothesis is supported by a large number of scientists, others think differently based on the idea that Neanderthals became extinct long before the great eruption took place.

I was born in Madrid on August 27, 1988 and since then I started a work of which there is no example. Fascinated by both numbers and letters and a lover of the unknown, that is why I am a future graduate in Economics and Journalism, interested in understanding life and the forces that have shaped it. Everything is easier, more useful and more exciting if, with a look at our past, we can improve our future and for that… History.
